Welcome to Dental Hygiene

Welcome to the website for the Dental Hygiene Program at Wake Technical Community College.  Dental Hygiene was established as an AAS program located on the Health Sciences Campus beginning Fall 2002.  The contact information for the department is as follows.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Dental Hygiene Department is to promote total wellness by advancing oral health in the state of North Carolina through quality education and service.  This mission is consistent with the missions of the Health Sciences Division and Wake Technical Community College.

Philosophy

The Dental Hygiene Program is founded on humanistic teaching, service, scholarly endeavors, and patient care.  The learning environment should stimulate the discovery of new knowledge via effective communication techniques.  A mutual respect between faculty, staff and students will be demonstrated in all endeavors.  The faculty’s primary responsibilities are to provide comprehensive approaches to student development that include and encourage critical, independent, and professional thinking while encouraging students to accept responsibility for the learning process.  Ultimately, the Department is committed to providing collaborative educational programs for a culturally diverse student population to optimize each individual’s growth, achievement, and maturation as a professional.

Accreditation

The dental hygiene program has been granted the Accreditation Status of Approval Without Reporting Requirements by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation.  This status is awarded to an educational program indicating that the program achieves or exceeds the basic requirements for accreditation.  The next site visit scheduled for the program is February 15 & 16, 2011.

A copy of the Dental Hygiene Accreditation Standards and CODA Policies and Procedures, including those for complaints, may be obtained by calling 1-800-621-8099.  The Standards may also be found on-line at American Dental Association (ADA) or in writing at 211 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL  60611.
